Hip hop dance forms the foundation of much of today's urban dance culture. At Kryptonite, we teach authentic hip hop techniques while respecting the culture that created them.
The Four Elements
Authentic hip hop culture rests on four pillars: MCing (rapping), DJing, breakdancing (breaking), and graffiti art. At Kryptonite, we focus on the dance elements—breaking, popping, locking, and krumping.
Breaking (B-Boy/B-Girl)
Breaking is the original hip hop dance style, born in the Bronx in the 1970s. It combines athletic power moves, freezes, and footwork. Our breaking classes teach foundation moves like the 6-step, windmills, and freezes. Safety is paramount—we emphasize progressions and proper technique.
Popping and Locking
Popping involves hitting—quickly tensing and relaxing muscles to create a "pop" effect. Styles like Animation, Robot, and Tutting evolved from popping traditions. Locking, created by Don Campbell in the 1970s, features freezing in locked positions followed by quick movements. Both styles require precision and musicality.
Krumping
Krumping emerged from Clowning in Los Angeles. Less structured than other styles, it emphasizes expressive, aggressive movement channeling emotion through dance. Our krumping classes teach foundational moves, stomps, and arms swings while encouraging personal expression.
